In order to make my research more applicable and useful to me, I need to decide what genre my short film is going to be. I can then research short films that are specific to that genre in order to give me inspiration and an insight into what the style/content/themes are of this genre.
Considered genres highlighted green:
TO CONCLUDE
Chosen Genre/Mergence of genres:
FACTION-
A literary and cinematic genre where real events are used as a basis for fictional narrative or dramatisation.
ART HOUSE/ART FILM-
an independent film aimed at a niche market rather than a mass audience. Intended to be artistic work and experimental. They contain unconventional or highly symbolic content.
Sub genres I intent to include:
...with added musical elements.
I want to base my shot story on a historical figure of some kind, preferably a classical music composer as this will fit nicely with the prominent musical element that I wish to include.
As I have decided to loosely base my short film upon the romantic composer Chopin, I am going to research his life to decide on a certain atmosphere that I want my short film to have. Also, I want to discover the key events in Chopin's life to see if I can create a short film narrative from this.
I have purchased one of the only biography's on Chopin: Chopin Prince of the Romantics by Adam Zamoyski.
The book contains immense detail, which will help me to create a short film with the correct atmosphere relating to Chopin's life. I realise that short films mostly work well with as little complexity as possible, which is why I am only creating a loose reference to Chopin's life using style and emotion rather than real contextual events.

As there is going to be a constant music track throughout my short film, I need to ensure that it doesn't come across as a music video to the audience. To do this, I am still going to include diegetic sound. As there is little dialogue in my short, I must concentrate on other sources of sound such as general ambience. Within each setting I will record a wild track of the room which I can include in the dub, this will allow for the film to have a sense of verisimilitude and therefore will be more pleasing to the audience.
Each scene of a short film is significant as there is so little time to fully portray everything to the audience. Therefore, I am going to break each scene down and explain why I have chosen to use it in my short and what it means in an art house sense.
- An open space, represents the end of Chopin's life
- The basis of the whole film, the other scenes are structured around this scene

- Represents Chopin's childhood
- A safe place where he grew up and learnt to play the piano

Here I experimented with different camera angles and filter effects. I need to portray a mood of loss and grief here as this scene is a reference to Chopin's death.
I tinted this with a slight grey colour and also faded the picture. It is a subtle effect but I think it works well and portrays the mood well.
Here, I blurred the edges of the frame which creates a dream-like effect. This may work well for flashback scenes or to portray disorientation but I do not think that it is suitable for this scene.
I like the sepia effect as it gives the shot a vintage look, however as this scene is connoting a recent bereavement it may not be a suitable aspect.
I upped the contrast and added warmer tones to this shot. I will consider this as it may connote a kind of peacefulness, I want my film to end on a happier note.
Here I faded the picture and added a vintage effect, but the picture still shows some colour. I quite like this as it doesn't portray either happy or sadness and suggests a tranquil state. I also like where the light falls in this photograph as it highlights the peacefulness of the scene.
This picture has a darker, sinister look. It also has blurred edges as well, which suggests an overly negative atmosphere.
I like the framing of this photograph as the stone in the middle is almost singled out. I want to include this feel within my short to indicate the significance of the person laid to rest there.
